WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

TEXAS WOLVES

Cop a load of this pawprint. According to the website of Houston-based radio station KILT, it was photographed by a man called 'Cowboy Dave' who was walking on his property with his dog called 'Woody' and his pet duck 'Sparkles'. No, I am not making any of this stuff up.

On top of this the coyotes and other wild animals on the ranch have disappeared. Although KILT suggested (tongue in cheek, we believe) that it was a chupacabras, a local wildlife professional identified it as being a wolf print.

As regular readers will know, back in 2010 we visited Texas and spent three weeks investigating the stories of blue dogs in the Lone Star State. We heard lots of accounts of wolves in Texas, which is pretty cool as - according to accepted wisdom - all three sub-species of grey wolf that once lived there, are extinct in the State..

Here is another slice of Mom's home-made evidence pie, suggesting that they are nothing of the sort.

"Chupacabra and Montauk Monster Mix – The San Diego Demonoid"

"Nowadays, it’s getting a lot easier to prove the existence of monsters and mythical creatures. And if you thought that the Chupacabra and the Montauk monster were just fairy tales, you should know that a mix between the two has been found on the shores of a San Diego beach, and it looks devilish".

Yet another dead carnivore washed up on a beach. Personally I think it is a dead dog. What do You think?

PALAENTOLOGICAL SUGGESTIONS FROM OUR LATEST MEMBER OF STAFF

The CFZ welcome their latest member of staff: Ms Jessica Taylor, who spent friday afternoon refurbishing the museum, and scanning in loads of stuff from the pre digital CFZ picture library (which is actually a large cardboard box on the floor of my study).

She expressed a keen interest in palaentology and whilst not familiar with the sterling work of Doctor Naish (although she once made him a cuppa) suggested that we should have a gander at this remarkable encounter with a surviving member of the dinosauridae, thought to have become extinct aeons ago...

BIG CAT NEWS: The Coventry Panther and Rothschild Terror Weapons

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper column inches than any other cryptozoological subject.

There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived in some way by us, so we should have a go at publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in.

It takes a long time to do, and is a fairly tedious task, so I am not promising that they will be done each day, but I will do them as regularly as I can. JD

Coventry Panther returns: Big cat spotted in Ryton Pools
Coventry Telegraph
The latest sighting was on Tuesday last week when a woman said a big cat strolled across her path before heading into Ryton Wood. The 83-acre ancient woodland is home to a flourishing deer population – meaning the illusive feline would have had no...

A "big black enormous thing" in the Midlands. Goodness me! This sighting has been given a cautious endorsement by the authorities.

Hybrid British Big Cats. A Rothschild Terror Weapon?, page 1the beast of bodmin moor has been around since the late 70's early 80's. basically up until a certain point in time in the 70's it was legal to own big cats as pets ...

"The reasonably harmless wild population of cats great and small has been topped up with hybrid Rothschild terror weapons. These will be activated as the bankers run for their escape pods. How are we going to run after the bankers with one of these creatures attached? It's a fiendish plan." This has to be a joke. Right? Reassure me someone.

ANDREW MAY: Words from the Wild Frontier

The Wild Frontier is strangely quiet at the moment. Word came through from Nick Redfern that he's been Under the Weather recently (let's hope he gets better soon!) but apart from that there's no news at all from the remoter fringes of the CFZ blogosphere.

KARL SHUKER: Predator deathmatch

Over the years, I have penned a number of forewords to other writers' books, the vast majority of which have been, to varying extents, of a cryptozoological nature. However, in recent times there has been one very notable exception to this trend – Nick Molloy's superb book Predator Deathmatch. I soon discovered that not only was it unlike any book that I'd contributed a foreword to before, but it was unlike any book that I'd ever read before – and it thoroughly captivated me.

BIG CAT NEWS: It's all about Gloucestershire

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper column inches than any other cryptozoological subject.

'Big cat' mystery of huge paw prints in the snow at Marston Green
Birmingham Mail

By Mike Lockley
A BIG CAT mystery sparked by giant prints on a snow-covered car park has been solved by the Birmingham Mail. And our investigation proved there's nothing quite as bunny as nature. For the 'paw marks', spotted by Kieron McArdle...

This is probably the stupidest non-story in Big cat News this week. "The cleaning company director believed the marks – as big as a human footprint – may have been left by a big cat". This is just another sign of how our increasingly urbanised and sedentry society is becoming increasingly (yes, I know I have now used the word 'increasingly' three times in the same paragraph, which is probably not the best grammar) divorced from any interaction with the natural world. Its a rabbit as any fule should kno.

Its all happening in Gloucestershire, which seems to have been the veritable hub of British Big Cat news in the last few weeks. No some 'academics' have launched a study:

Academics to study big cat sightings

They cite Scotland's Loch Ness Monster and the Abominable Snowman as examples. Rhiannon Fisher, a lecturer at the Royal Agricultural College and a part-time PhD student in the CCRI, added, "We are not saying that there is or is not a wild cat in the ...

And yet another Gloucestershire sighting:

Another 'bit cat' spotted in Gloucestershire
This is Gloucestershire

Helen Stratford, of Teddington Gardens, Upton St Leonards, said she spotted a large cat in fields by her house on Saturday evening around 5.40pm. She said she was "shocked" by the sighting, which happened as she walked her dog.

It doesn't actually give a description so it is not really that useful. But here's another - you've guessed it - from Gloucestershire. Except that it's not. It is a round up of sightings from the last seven years, which presents a useful overview, but for a moment I was getting excited. A lion? pride comes before a fall.
