WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

CRYPTOLINK: Loch Ness Monster Revealed

CRYPTOLINK: Book Review - Here Be Dragons: Strange Creatures of Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador has a rich history and storytelling tradition concerning unknown creatures of the deep – and on land. Some of them we’re certain exist, others we’re not so sure. We just don’t know enough to say one way or the other. ‘Here Be Dragons: Strange Creatures of Newfoundland and Labrador,” is a discussion of our province’s oddities of the animal world – our cryptids, or animals whose existence is alleged but not definitively proven. Bruce Hynes’s book is a very respectable examination of cryptozoology, the study of such ‘hidden’ creatures specific to Newfoundland and Labrador.

CRYPTOLINKS: Sasquatch trashed my Winnebago

Something that always amuses (and occasionally infuriates) me is that the mass media usually ignore positive stories about what the cryptozoological community is doing. To the best of my knowledge, for example, there will only be one news report on our exhibition at Barnstaple Museum, and that will be in Corinna and my column for the Bideford Post. However, occasionally they pick up on a story and run with it en masse. Look at these different accounts of a Bigfoot researcher who claims that his Winnebago was attacked by a rock-hurling man-beast..

WATCHER OF THE SKIES: Today's Fortean bird news

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that - whereas the study of out of place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot, or lake monsters - it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean Zoologist to be interested in. So, after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo, Corinna has taken the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.

TODAY'S BIG CAT ROUND UP

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject. There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we should have a go at publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in. In September 2012, Emma Osborne decided that the Mystery Cat Study Group really deserved a blog of its own within the CFZ Blog Network.

So, once again another Monday dawns. It is Jess Heard's 21st Birthday today, so much love goes out to her from all of us at CFZ/Gonzo Towers. We have a trainee starting for a week's CFZ experience on Friday; I hope that she gets everything that she would wish out of a week with us. The Barnstaple Museum show continues (I went in on Saturday and it looks grrrrrreat), and Issue One of the Journal of Cryptozoology will be out imminently. The UK leg of the Jefferson Starship tour comes to an end, and everyone involved will be sad to return to normality...

A video (not by me) of Jefferson Starship doing 'White Rabbit' at the Southampton gig last week. There will be more JS and Auburn stuff being edited this week, but I am insanely overstretched at the moment, and whilst I would like to do everything at once, my multitasking skills are not that great....

The Gonzo Daily is a two way process. If you have any news or want to write for us, please contact me at jon@eclipse.co.uk. If you are an artist and want to showcase your work, or even just say hello please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk. Please copy, paste and spread the word about this magazine as widely as possible. We need people to read us in order to grow, and as soon as it is viable we shall be invading more traditional magaziney areas. Join in the fun, spread the word, and maybe if we all chant loud enough we CAN stop it raining. See you tomorrow...

The Gonzo Daily is - as the name implies - a daily online magazine (mostly) about artists connected to the Gonzo Multimedia group of companies. But it also has other stuff as and when the editor feels like it. The Editor is an old hippy of 53 who - together with his orange cat - puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention the orange cat?

    OLL LEWIS: Yesterday's News Today

On this day in 1910 Dr Crippen, the first criminal to be apprehended using wireless communications, was sentenced to death. Crippen, in reality not a doctor but a salesman of homoeopathic medicine is thought to have poisoned his wife and burred her in quicklime under his cellar before moving his lover in to his house. The police were first allerted to the fact that something was amiss by a famed circus strong woman known as Vulcana who was a friend of Crippen's wife. Since the verdict, and Crippen's execution, several people have expressed their doubts about Dr Crippen's guilt including Raymond Chandler who thought it was odd that Crippen would take care to dispose of his wifes head, arms and legs but preserve her torso in the cellar (this could be explained by the quicklime getting wet and becoming slaked lime which acts as a preservative). Recent DNA evidence has also thrown doubt on whether the remains found were that of Crippen's wife, however as Crippen's lover claimed in the 1930s that he had told her he killed his wife, I'm willing to bet that any discrepency in the DNA is due to contamination of the sample, which was never kept under sterile conditions by Scotland Yard.
