WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

MUIRHEAD`S MYSTERIES: THE LUHENG FISH - A MYSTERY HONG KONG LAMPREY OR MER-BEING?

This cryptid is new to me,I mean I only came across it on the Web about 2 months ago. It appears to have been some sort of aquatic creature. This is one account of it from May 22nd 2010. in the original “Chinglish.”

“ Luheng fish, but also for Lu Ting fish is a Tai O in Hong Kong [on the N.W. coast of Lantau Island,in 1985 when I left Hong Kong this was a fishing village-R.]. and Zhuhai Wanshan Islands [includes the Lema islands which could be seen from my bedroom window in Hong Kong looking south, see map] area infested mysterious ethnic group. About their mysterious legends, from the Eastern Jin Dynasty[265-420 C.E.-R] to the present has been circulated. The so-called “Luheng fish” or “ Lu Ting fish,” are some of the general appearance of people who are different, in Hong Kong legends refer to their body of a scaly, and love to suck genitals  [Sic! I presume this means a sucking action like a leech. Or a lamprey-R] Sometimes use the catch and Tai O residents for chicken farm also gained when the dive. In fact, as early as the Eastern Jin Dynasty when it has been documented on “Lu Ting man” argument, but these Lu Ting description of the person, and today on “Luheng fish” were different legends. So although “Luheng fish” is actually “Lu Ting fish” in the word of the turn, but the argument has not been confirmed. “(1)

It`s hard to know what to make of this. There have been dugong in Hong Kong waters until recent times, but they weren`t confined to Lantau. The problem with the lamprey or mer-being identity is that neither are scaly.

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in. So after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo Corinna took the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.

TODAY'S BIG CAT ROUND UP

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject. There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in. In September 2012 Emma Osborne decided that the Mystery Cat Study Group really deserved a blog of its own within the CFZ Blog Network.

    The Gonzo Daily - Thursday
My friend Dr Chris Clark once was generous enough to describe me in a review of my 2004 book 'Monster Hunter' as: "the nearest thing we have to a real-life Professor Challenger", and I have spent much of the last nine years trying to be modest in the face of this. At the recent Weird Weekend, Judge Smith was kind enough to give me a copy of the complete Professor Challenger stories by Arthur Conan-Doyle, and last night I sat down with a cup of tea, and the orange kitten on my knee and started to read it for the first time in about thirty years. Professor Challenger has many good, nay excellent, points but he is also a bad tempered, irascible sociopath who doesn't take fools even slightly gladly and once threw a gin bottle at an annoying assistant's head. No, sorry that last one was me. Challenger also adores his wife who is one of the few people who gets away with telling him when he is behaving like an arse. Sorry Chris, I still don't see it
On another subject, as I said yesterday many readers of both blogs will know, or have met Margaret Rickard (Stuart's widow) and my next door neighbour for the last eight and a half years. She is seriously ill in hospital, and I would ask you all to remember her in your thoughts and prayers.

    *  The Gonzo Daily is a two way process. If you have any news or want to write for us, please contact me at  jon@eclipse.co.uk. If you are an artist and want to showcase your work, or even just say hello please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk. Please copy, paste and spread the word about this magazine as widely as possible. We need people to read us in order to grow, and as soon as it is viable we shall be invading more traditional magaziney areas. Join in the fun, spread the word, and maybe if we all chant loud enough we CAN stop it raining. See you tomorrow...

    *  The Gonzo Daily is - as the name implies - a daily online magazine (mostly) about artists connected to the Gonzo Multimedia group of companies. But it also has other stuff as and when the editor feels like it. The same team also do a weekly newsletter called - imaginatively - The Gonzo Weekly. Find out about it at this link:
    http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2012/11/all-gonzo-news-wots-fit-to-print.html
    * We should probably mention here, that some of our posts are links to things we have found on the internet that we think are of interest. We are not responsible for spelling or factual errors in other people's websites. Honest guv!

    *  Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 54 who - together with his orange cat (who is currently on sick leave in Staffordshire) and two very small kittens (one of whom is also orange) puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish, and sometimes a small Indian frog. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention the orange cat?

CRYPTOLINK: Exclusive video of alleged “Chupacabra” sighting in Valley Park

A word about cryptolinks: we are not responsible for the content of cryptolinks, which are merely links to outside articles that we think are interesting (sometimes for the wrong reasons), usually posted up without any comment whatsoever from me.

VALLEY PARK, MO (KTVI)– Exclusive video of a mysterious animal that has been spotted several times in the Valley Park area was given to Fox 2′s Anthony Kiekow on Wednesday.
The video shows a grey animal that looks similar to a dog, but some Valley Park residents say it is “something” else.
“It looks like a weird Coyote,” Eric Londal said.
However, some said it is the mythical ”Chupacabra.”

If you've been in bigfooting for more longer than Finding Bigfoot has been on the air, then you certainly know about the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Society and one of its founding members, Eric Altman.  For the newbies who have only recently taken up residence in Bigfootland, Eric is a long-time researcher of bigfoots, and all sorts of other weird things.

Eric is my go-to guy for investigating reports in the PA area, and he graciously helps me research sighting reports from that area of the country.  He and his colleagues in the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Society conduct thorough investigations, often on-site with the witnesses.  Eric and the PBS have been invaluable resources for me over the last few years.
